Medicare For Dummies For Dummies Business Personal Finance eBook Patricia Barry Reviews
- I'm generally a fan of the "Dummies" series but this book is a train wreck. Who is likely to buy this book? That's the key question the writer and editors should have asked themselves. The answer is not someone who wants to know every last detail about Medicare. The answer is someone who doesn't understand the Medicare program and needs some help figuring out the basics.
The book desperately needs an initial chapter that just -- and I mean just -- provides the basics. It should spell out what website you need to go to to apply. What information you'll need to provide. How long the approval process takes and so on. That 10-15 page (at most!) chapter would have been helpful. After that, all the thousands of the details the author goes over would be there for people who need them.
Instead the author feels obliged to go over every possibility -- you're claiming Medicare early, you're applying from a foreign country, etc. -- so the basics are lost in a blizzard of stuff that is irrelevant to most people.
The only reason I didn't give the book one star is I suppose it's a useful reference to have in case you do end up needing to know some of the details.
But as a guide to signing up for Medicare if you're not familiar with it, this book stinks on ice. - No mention of plans F or N. F is a very important option to concider.
- Despite being a ‘current’ volume much of the information is out of sync with current requirements. However it is a good basic guide and will provide most with the questions they need to ask before signing up for Medicare.
- I am glad I bought this book. At a certain time in your life, you realize your mailman knows you’re about to have an important milestone birthday because you get inundated with unsolicited mail from insurance companies or insurance agents. This book lets you shut all the noise and focus on good information and hints from someone who isn’t trying to sell you something.
I am happy I bought it. However, I have a friend that just went to the US government website to see her choices and make a decision. Me? I still needed a dummies book. - Helpful book, at least until I discovered a gaping discrepancy between what the book so authoritatively put up in its Figure 4-1, and what I was offered by United Health Care's AARP Medigap policies in California, in August 2018. It this simply a California vs the rest-of-the-country discrepancy?
- This is an excellent book for understanding the full range of choices with Medicare. Surely only a government could come up with something as complicated as the Medicare system. The chapters here are written in layman's terms. They explain the difference between traditional Medicare, Medicare supplement, and Medicare Advantage plans. There is also information on getting help paying your premiums as well as step-by-step instructions on how to find the plans available in your zip code and compare them without going to 15 different sites or falling prey to a sales pitch. I highly recommend this book for anyone approaching Medicare age.
- I'm 64 and the piranha insurance companies are in my mailbox every day. This book and the one you can order from Social Security will be your bible as you work your way through the plans and the sales pitches. If you are reading this and getting Medicare in 2019, you need this book due to the changes in 2020
- Medicare is complicated and full of traps. This provided a map of the mind field that helped a lot to navigate the twisted landscape of health coverage. A good and trustworthy source. The pain of the read was not the author’s fault, it is just that complex. They provided the best coverage with the least pain. A must to read for anyone coming up to retirement age.
