Spanish Conversation Practice Makes Perfect Jean Yates Books Reviews
- As someone who studied a bit in the past, forgot some easy things, knew a few intermediate things, this great buy really gives you many fine points to help you start to actually speak the language. It's a book for someone who's already gone through a basic/elementary book. You'll get the maximum benefit if you pay attention to many parts of the conversations that aren't even emphasised I'm referring to the tricky aspect of languages where you can't do word for word translations and the different way prepostions are used. Want to say "about" something in Spanish? Use "de"(!)--and there are many other little stumbling blocks like that, which will either frustrate you or, like me, fascinate you. Like I said, it's a great buy.
- I already owned the same book, but the Basic English one. I have used it so much, that decided to try this one. So now I use both, one which focuses more on grammar and vocabulary and this one (English Conversation) that focuses on day to day pertinent situations. It has many great exercises and thorough explanations for common American sayings. Although I agree that perhaps a student will never hear some them, I do focus on those that are quite common. Yes and the students enjoy them a lot or say, "oh so that's what that meant.
But what I love the most about this book is that every chapter has a dialogue. I literary own a library of I don't know how many teaching English books and I don't know why, most of them just bring a dialogue or two! Dialogues for me are essential for role playing, improving reading/pronunciation skills, etc. And in my case (English is not my first language), I have surprisingly learned a thing or two with these books. Highly recommend it, bought used and arrived like new! - I am using the exercises to help me get beyond basic level Spanish. I already own the Practice Makes Perfect book on past tense verbs and found that extremely useful- purchased it in a brick and mortar bookstore here in Mexico. I will warn you that doing exercises in both books will increase your vocabulary- I have looked up a lot of words. I use these with a paper Spanish dictionary and a Spanish app on my Itouch so that I can easily refer to conjugations of unfamiliar verbs - sneaker irregular verbs mostly.
This book is arranged around an area of conversational development- like talking about future events, or making requests. If you want to work your way beyond the basics take a look at it. There are two reasons I took off one star. First is that the conversations at the start of each section are so small on my Itouch as to be unreadable. When I use the book on my laptop, it is a lot easier. Second, even on my laptop, exercises that are columnar end up squished or mashed together, my choice. I like the book well enough I use it anyway. - I have just started using this book with my first Spanish as a native language ESL student. She was somewhat intimidated by it. There are no illustrations, but as we are progressing, she is becoming more confident with her use of the language.
I have given a copy to my Greek ESL student, and told me it was frightening, "there are no pictures". I explained that we were going to work through it together, and are not going to start until I think she is ready. She aceepted this. - This book helps students learn vocabulary and verb constructions in context, through example, and with practice. My friend from Guatemala and I are using this book to help each other. I'm learning Spanish, and he is learning English. With the Spanish version on one side of the page and the English version on the other side, it is convenient for us to read to each other in the conversational style in Spanish, then in English. The exercises are for Spanish learners, but there are sections called "Improving your conversation" that provide a lot of information about usage, tenses, etc. that my Spanish-speaking friend finds helpful also. The material is challenging enough for intermediate students. I recommend this book for practicing Spanish at this level.
- Practice is important and talking in spontaneous conversations is crucial. PMP-Spanish Conversation helps build the confidence you need to chat with strangers. Learning a new language is also about finding ways to have satisfaction as you work to understand what is said and make sensible responses.
I have made some great mistakes when I started learning German in Germany. I have found I have the same talent as I learn Spanish. I also discovered just how kind others were just because I tried. This will cut down your mistakes. Be creative and see if you can make some that are funny.
This opens an opportunity to make friends so take advantage and enjoy! - I am a self taught spanish speaker, and was somehow under the impression that a beginner could use this book. In case you are rowing that boat, know that you will need to complete the Beginners Spanish before tackling this book (or if you want to get frustrated and discouraged go ahead and try this book first). I have several of these books and they are great learning tools.
- I took college Spanish and was at a *complete* loss on how to actually communicate or comprehend anything spoken. This book is excellent. It has so many conversational examples and usage of words that really help expand knowledge of the language. Many of these phrases I would have never thought to use since Spanish can be so different from English. This book helped a lot with so many excellent examples. I think if you're in the same boat I was where you can conjugate verbs all day long, but not understand the radio or Spanish TV, this book will be very helpful to you. Reading and rereading the example phrases and saying them out loud has expanded my conversational knowledge by leaps and bounds. This book is such a small expense for what you get.
