Your Baby First Year Fourth Edition American Academy Of Pediatrics Steven P Shelov MD 9780812988451 Books Reviews

  • Our Pediatrician gave us a copy of this book at our first appointment for our little girl and my husband and I have read over it several times. It's kept us from calling him on many different occasions. We've also bought two copies- one for some misinformed grandparents and one for another mom-to-be.

This book is full of useful information. It covers just about every topic you can imagine for the first couple of years, from breastfeeding (and formula) to different muscle reflexes and behavior and the like. It's well written and extremely easy to understand, even including little diagrams and some growth charts in the back. The index makes it very easy to look up a certain topic quickly.
  • I've used this book now for both of my kids and highly have recommended it to friends and family (when they have theirs). I will probably hand mine over to my sisters or get them a new copy. This book had such great detail, that everything your doctors don't tell you, forget to tell you or tell you wrong, you will find and have comfort from this book. Everything from mother's care, to c-section and vaginal birth recovery, colic/gas, holding a baby, healing after a circumcision, the naval stump falling off and more. I can't tell you how much this book helped with milestone and really feeling as if you are doing the right things. I used it for my second child and left it on the coffee table so I could go back and remember what to expect in the weeks after coming home. Everything was spot as and I never felt like I needed to call on "Dr. Google" for everything. This is a great gift for an expecting mother and father.
  • Enjoy your baby. Don't focus too much on milestones - it makes you feel like you're checking a box rather than enjoying each new accomplishment. The book is fine, but try not to fall into the comparison trap - it took us a while to understand this but we were so much happier when we did.
  • As FTM, I wanted a baby book that was more credible than "What to expect the first year", but found the two books largely the same. Just like 'what to expect', this book includes a first aid, disease and vaccine portion and then goes on to explain babies' development for every month. The only thing where I've noticed this book is lacking is on the subject of sleep. I supplemented this book with 'Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child'. I really like that this book also has a section in each chapter dedicated to grandparents, explaining that things change over the years and to respect the parents' wishes and things like that! This book gives me more peace of mind than 'what to expect' because I know it's directly coming from the AAP.
  • It has taken me forever (exaggerated of course) to find this book. I received the first edition 9 years ago and no other book even half matches how great this book is. It is detailed what to expect during each month, how you can help baby develop skills, messages for grandparents that are tactful and very kind, and even has advice for older children. This book is a MUST buy no matter how many children you already have.
  • This book was recommended by our pediatrician so I bought it less than 24 hours after our baby was born. It has been such a great resource with the perfect information for baby. It eases my mind a lot and lets me know what baby should be doing. I definitely recommend this for people preparing for baby and not just the first one )
  • Very basic information only. Was looking for something with a bit more in-depth information on medical issues and developmental milestones. You'd be better off googling most of the topica. Returned item as I know how to change a diaper and that I should put a baby on it's back to sleep.
  • This book has been such a great resource for my husband and I as we navigate new parenthood. Google is fine, but we find there are so many non-experts sharing what they think is helpful, but at the end of the day we just wanted an expert's point of view. This book has been a great resource at 2 AM when we weren't sure if calling the Pediatrician was necessary or not. Of course, if you're experiencing an emergency, you should ALWAYS call 911, but for minor things this book is wonderful.
